Youth Leadership Academy
The Youth Leadership Academy is an annual knowledge based and activity oriented leadership and good governance youth training program in Helenvale. Helenvale Centre of Hope intends to bring together the 3 different High Schools (Gelvandale HS, Hillside HS and Chapman HS) & local youth groups to deepen their leadership knowledge and foster active youth participation in good governance processes and democracy building within the community.
To complete the program each year, about 30 youth attends monthly sessions on a Saturday morning from 9am-2pm. We will have quarterly semesters. Semester 1 will focus on “Understanding Self”, Semester 2 will focus on “Understanding others”, semester 3 will focus on “leading self” and semester 4 will focus on “leading others”.
After each semester, each participant is mandated to conduct a passing-it-on (PiO) exercise, which implies doing a mini training to share what they have learnt with at least 5 youth in their school or community, only those who complete the PiO qualify for the next semester. Through the PiO component of Helenvale Centre of Hope, we hope to educate at least 600 youth about leadership and good governance. The Academy takes place at the Helenvale Resource Centre. The goal of the project is to empower youth with leadership skills to make them collaborate to change themselves and their community for better.
